The captain who rewrote the record books of Indian cricket
In short: From training in a small Punjab town to leading India to a historic 2025 World Cup victory, Harmanpreet Kaur has redefined what is possible for women's cricket. Her journey is marked by record-breaking centuries, global franchise dominance, and a relentless drive for victory.
Born in Moga, Punjab, in 1989, Harmanpreet Kaur’s path to the top was forged through rigorous training at the Gian Jyoti School Academy. Her early career was defined by grit, often playing alongside men during her formative years. This tenacity eventually propelled her to the international stage, where she debuted in the 2009 World Cup, quickly establishing herself as a formidable all-rounder capable of both explosive batting and precise off-spin.
Kaur’s captaincy has ushered in a golden era for the Indian women's national team. Under her leadership, India secured the 2025 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup title, defeating South Africa in the final at DY Patil Stadium. Her tenure is characterized by historic milestones, including India's first-ever Test victory over Australia in 2023 and their first bilateral WODI away series win against England since 1999. She also led the team to gold at the 2022 Asian Games and multiple Women's Asia Cup titles in 2012, 2016, and 2022.
Beyond the national team, Kaur is a global icon in franchise cricket. She was the first Indian woman to sign with an overseas T20 franchise, joining the Sydney Thunder in 2016. In the Women's Premier League, she has captained the Mumbai Indians to titles in both 2023 and 2025. Her individual accolades are equally vast, including being named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2023 and receiving the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2026.
However, her career has not been without controversy. In 2023, she faced an ICC suspension and a significant fine following an outburst during a tour of Bangladesh, where her actions led to a player walk-out. Even with these instances, her statistical supremacy is certain, as she possesses the highest tally of 331 runs in World Cup knockout stages.
