In short: Heidi Alexander has navigated the complex corridors of British politics, from local council roles to the Shadow Cabinet. After a pivotal period managing London's transport during a global pandemic, she has returned to her birthplace to take on one of the most senior roles in the UK government.

Born in Swindon in 1975, Heidi Alexander’s political trajectory has been defined by a focus on urban and regional change. After studying geography and urban change at Durham's Grey College, she built a career through local government and parliamentary research, eventually serving on the Lewisham London Borough Council for Evelyn from 2004 until 2010. She completed her studies at New College Sixth Form. Her academic background includes a BA in geography and an MA in European Urban and Regional Change. Before entering Parliament, she worked as a campaign manager for Clothes Aid.

Her rise within the Labour Party saw her hold several high-profile positions, including Shadow Secretary of State for Health following Jeremy Corbyn's election as leader. In 2016, she became the first shadow cabinet minister to resign, citing a dysfunctional and unprofessional shadow cabinet following the EU referendum and the dismissal of Hilary Benn. This resignation was part of a coordinated move regarding the party's response to the referendum. She previously served as a parliamentary private secretary to Mary Creagh. Additionally, she held a position as an opposition whip in 2012.

Alexander’s expertise in infrastructure was further cemented during her tenure as Deputy Mayor of London for Transport from 2018 to 2021. In this capacity, she managed London's transport network through the COVID-19 pandemic and negotiated government bailouts. After being re-elected as the Swindon South MP in 2024, she took over from Louise Haigh as Secretary of State for Transport in November 2024. During her time in London, she worked to resolve delays involving Crossrail and Hammersmith Bridge. She also advocated for cycling to encourage different transport methods.
