From a polar bear understudy to an Emmy-nominated star
In short: Before he was a household name in television drama, Henry Ian Cusick's professional acting debut involved playing a polar bear in a Christmas pantomime. Trace the global journey of this Peruvian-Scottish actor, from the streets of Trujillo to the heights of Hollywood.
Born in Trujillo, Peru, on 17 April 1967, Henry Ian Cusick's early life was defined by significant movement. The son of Esperanza Chávez and Henry Joseph Cusick, he moved to Madrid, Spain, at age two, before spending a decade in Trinidad and Tobago. It was there that he attended Presentation College in San Fernando, before finally relocating to Scotland at age fourteen.
Cusick's professional foundation was built in classical theatre. Following his time at Glasgow's Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, his professional journey commenced at the Citizens' Theatre. His early stage work included notable roles such as Dorian Gray, Hamlet, and Horner in The Country Wife. His talent in classical roles was recognized at the 1995 Ian Charleson Awards, where he received a commendation for his performances as Torquato Tasso and Creon.
His transition to screen brought international recognition, most notably as Desmond Hume in the ABC series Lost. His casting in the series was famously facilitated by a meeting with executive producer Carlton Cuse while Cusick was staying with actor Brian Cox. Cuse's search for a character with Scottish or Irish roots made Cusick an ideal candidate. This role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Beyond acting, Cusick has expanded into directing and technology. His short film, dress, won awards at the Hawaii International Film Festival. In 2017, he also lent his voice to the JamBios memory-sharing platform, acting as the digital biographer 'Monty' to help users preserve personal histories. He currently resides in Hawaii with his wife, Annie Cusick Wood, and their three sons.
