In short: Spanning roughly 320,000 square kilometers, the Hudson Bay Lowlands represent Canada's largest wetland. This vast landscape of peat bogs and fens sits nestled between the ancient Canadian Shield and the shores of Hudson Bay, creating a unique, soggy frontier where arctic and boreal ecosystems collide.

The geography of the Lowlands is a product of recent geological upheaval. During the Pleistocene Epoch, which lasted from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, massive continental glaciers scoured the region. As these ice sheets retreated, they left behind irregular basins that filled with meltwater, creating a complex network of hundreds of thousands of lakes, swamps, and slow-moving rivers like the Churchill, Nelson, and Albany.

This landscape is characterized by its extreme drainage challenges. Much of the area is composed of muskeg, including peat bogs and fens, where organic matter has accumulated over the last 10,000 years. The soil is notably thin and highly acidic, a factor that has historically discouraged large-scale agriculture and permanent European settlement, even as the region became a hub for the fur trade between the mid-17th and mid-19th centuries.

Despite the difficult terrain, the region holds significant economic and ecological value. It serves as a vital habitat for migratory birds, such as snow geese, and large mammals like polar bears. Furthermore, the Lowlands contain substantial mineral deposits, including nickel and chromite. Projects like the 'Ring of Fire' aim to develop roads for resource extraction, though these plans remain subject to environmental assessments.

The land itself is still in motion. Due to post-glacial rebound, the plains are slowly rising out of the ocean as the weight of the departed ice vanishes. This ongoing geological process, combined with a climate heavily influenced by the seasonal freezing and thawing of Hudson Bay, ensures the Lowlands remain one of the most dynamic wetland environments on Earth.
