The digital pioneer that defined how we talk online
In short: Before WhatsApp or Slack, there was ICQ. Launched in 1996, this Israeli innovation introduced the world to centralized, real-time messaging. It wasn't just a tool; it was a blueprint for the modern social media era, turning individual user accounts into a global network of instant connection.
Developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis, ICQ—an acronym for 'I Seek You'—was released in November 1996. Founded by a team including Yair Goldfinger, Sefi Vigiser, Amnon Amir, Arik Vardi, and Yossi Vardi, the service bypassed traditional marketing, relying instead on word-of-mouth. Unlike the then-common Internet Relay Chat (IRC), ICQ provided a centralized service with individual accounts, setting the standard for later platforms like AIM. The technology was initially distributed without charge, and by 2002, AOL had successfully secured a patent for the system. Early versions like ICQ 99a/b were among the first widely available releases.
The platform's identity was tied to the UIN (User Identification Number), a sequential six-digit number starting at 100,000. These numbers became so coveted that by 2010, attractive UINs could demand over 11,000₽. The service underwent significant corporate shifts, being acquired by AOL in 1998 for an initial $287 million, and later by Digital Sky Technologies (now VK) in 2010 for $187.5 million. The system allowed users to change personal details, such as their screen names, without needing to re-register. To prevent the theft of valuable numbers, the company began storing email addresses linked to specific UINs.
At its peak around 2001, ICQ boasted over 100 million registered accounts. While it eventually lost ground to competitors like Google Talk in the US, it remained a cultural pillar in Russian-speaking regions. Even as it transitioned to a mobile-first system under Mail.Ru Group, its influence persisted through various iterations, including 'ICQ New' in 2020. After decades of service, the platform officially shut down on June 26, 2024. The platform saw a massive 35-fold spike in Hong Kong downloads during January 2021 due to WhatsApp privacy concerns. The final major update, version 10.0, was released in 2016.
