The Swiss river that defies geography to reach the Black Sea
In short: Most rivers stay within their own borders, but the Inn is a geographical outlier. It is the only river originating in Switzerland whose waters eventually flow into the Black Sea, carving a path through three nations before joining one of Europe's most famous waterways.
The Inn travels 518 km (322 mi) from its source in the Swiss Alps to its confluence with the Danube. Its journey begins west of St. Moritz in the Engadine region, specifically near the lakes Sils and Silvaplana. The river's drainage basin reaches a staggering height at Piz Bernina, which stands at 4,049 m (13,284 ft)—the highest point in the entire Danube watershed.
Etymologically, the name 'Inn' is rooted in ancient Celtic words meaning simply 'water.' While it was referred to as Aenus by the Romans and Ainos by the Greeks, its modern naming evolved through linguistic shifts. In old Bavarian, the transition from 'e' to 'i' transformed Enus into Inn. Interestingly, while some 16th-century records suggested a different origin near the Reschen Pass, it has been uniformly recognized since that era as originating at the Maloja Pass.
The river serves as a significant geographical and industrial artery. It forms a natural border between Germany (Bavaria) and Austria (Upper Austria) before finally entering the Danube in Passau. Despite its importance, it is technically considered a tributary because the Danube drains a larger surface area and maintains a more consistent flow. Today, the river's power is harnessed by 24 hydroelectric plants, with Verbund AG operating 17 of them.
The Inn also demonstrates the raw power of Alpine hydrology. On June 3, 2013, it reached a historic flood level in Passau of 6,820 m3/s (241,000 cu ft/s), marking the highest recorded water level since 1501. This event severely flooded the historic center where the Inn, Danube, and Ilz rivers converge.
