How Iran Prepared for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang
In short: In 2018, Iran sent a delegation of 378 athletes to compete in Indonesia. While the nation has participated in the Asian Games since their inception in 1951, the 2018 event was marked by a last-minute change in leadership after a significant injury sidelined their designated flag bearer just before the opening.
The 2018 Asian Games, held across Jakarta and Palembang from 18 August to 2 September, represented the latest chapter in Iran's long history with the competition. Iran has been a consistent presence at the Games since the inaugural 1951 event in Delhi. Historically, the country's most successful outing occurred in 1974 when it hosted the games in Tehran, securing a total of 81 medals, including 36 gold, 28 silver, and 17 bronze. In the preceding 2014 Incheon games, the nation finished with 57 medals, consisting of 21 gold, 18 silver, and 18 bronze.
For the 2018 competition, the Iranian sports governing body selected Kimia Alizadeh to lead the delegation as the flag bearer. Alizadeh, a 19-year-old athlete who had previously earned a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, was a prominent choice for the role. However, the plan faced an unexpected obstacle just 12 days before the tournament began. During a training session, Alizadeh suffered a torn ACL, an injury that forced her withdrawal from the opening ceremony duties.
Following the injury, the sports committee moved quickly to adjust their plans. Elaheh Ahmadi was confirmed as the replacement to carry the flag at the inauguration of the competitions. This transition highlights the volatility of high-level athletic preparation, where even the most carefully planned ceremonial roles can be disrupted by physical setbacks. Despite this change, the delegation of 378 athletes moved forward to represent the country throughout the two-week event in Indonesia, continuing a sporting tradition that spans over six decades of international competition.
