In short: Born from the 2006 merger of two struggling conservative factions, Isamaa has navigated nearly two decades of shifting coalitions and internal fractures. Despite periods of electoral decline and high-profile defections, the party has recently surged to unprecedented popularity, reshaping the landscape of Estonian politics through strategic leadership and voter realignment.

The origins of Isamaa lie in the 2006 consolidation of the Pro Patria Union and the Res Publica Party. Both groups faced significant political headwinds; Res Publica had suffered a collapse in public support following the resignation of the government led by Juhan Parts, while Pro Patria found itself increasingly sidelined. By uniting, these parties sought to prevent the fragmentation of the conservative vote, which had previously allowed the Centre Party to dominate the left-wing electorate. The merger was formalized on 4 June 2006, initially operating under the name Pro Patria and Res Publica Union.

Throughout its history, the party has been a frequent participant in Estonian government coalitions, often partnering with the Reform Party. However, this path has not been without turbulence. The party faced a major electoral setback in 2015, losing nine parliamentary seats, which triggered a leadership transition from Urmas Reinsalu to Margus Tsahkna. Internal friction continued to manifest, notably in 2017 when Tsahkna and Marko Mihkelson departed the party, and again in 2022 when dissenters formed the Parempoolsed party over disagreements regarding cooperation with the Estonian Conservative People's Party.

Despite these challenges, Isamaa has experienced a dramatic resurgence since August 2023. Under the leadership of Urmas Reinsalu, the party successfully capitalized on voter dissatisfaction with the Reform Party’s tax policies and positioned itself as a moderate alternative to more extreme political options. This momentum culminated in a significant victory during the June 2024 European Parliament elections. By attracting defectors from the Centre Party and disillusioned Reform voters, Isamaa has transitioned from a period of electoral vulnerability to becoming a leading force in the national discourse, proving the resilience of its national conservative and Christian democratic platform.
