In short: Born from the merger of two villages in 1871, Ivanovo transformed into a global textile powerhouse. Once rivaling European industrial hubs, the city earned its unique nickname due to its female-dominated workforce. Today, this historic center of the Golden Ring reflects a complex legacy of Soviet industry and social change.

Located on the banks of the Uvod River in western Russia, Ivanovo emerged as a major industrial center in the late 19th century. The city was officially created in 1871 by merging the village of Ivanovo with the industrial settlement of Voznesensky Posad. Known until 1932 as Ivanovo-Voznesensk, it quickly gained the moniker 'Russian Manchester' because of its massive textile output. By the early 20th century, the city was so productive that it competed with Łódź for the title of Europe's primary textile hub.

The city's industrial success was deeply tied to its workforce. Because the textile industry predominantly employed women, Ivanovo became famously known as the 'city of brides.' This social structure was not without friction; poor living conditions for workers fueled frequent strikes, including a significant protest in 1905 that contributed to the first Russian revolution. During this period, the city also became a site of political innovation, with the formation of the Ivanovo Soviet, one of the earliest of its kind in history.

Throughout the 20th century, Ivanovo evolved beyond its textile roots. It became a site for international solidarity, notably hosting the Interdom school for children of foreign Communists starting in 1937. During World War II, the city served as a base for the Normandie-Niemen air regiment, a group of French pilots fighting alongside Soviet forces. While the city faced significant challenges, including a devastating F4 tornado in 1984 that destroyed over 1,180 homes, it remains a vital administrative center and a key destination within Russia's Golden Ring.
