Why this Himalayan foothills city is named after the humble Ceylon olive
In short: Nestled at the base of the Himalayas, Jalpaiguri is a vital West Bengal hub defined by its rivers and monsoon rains. Beyond its geography, this city serves as a regional administrative center with a history dating back to 1885, blending academic prestige with a rich, diverse cultural heritage.
The name Jalpaiguri is derived from the Bengali words 'Jalpai,' meaning Ceylon olive, and 'Guri,' signifying a place, reflecting the region's historical abundance of the fruit. Situated at an elevation of 89 meters, the city is flanked by the Teesta and Karala rivers. Its climate is marked by significant rainfall, averaging 3400 mm annually, with the monsoon season spanning from June to September. While the city experiences high humidity and warm summers, it remains free of snowfall despite its proximity to the Himalayas.
Administratively, the city is governed by the Jalpaiguri Municipality, established in 1885 as the tenth oldest in West Bengal. It serves as the headquarters for both the Jalpaiguri district and the broader Jalpaiguri division, which encompasses five North Bengal districts. The city's infrastructure includes a circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court and a robust transportation network, including four railway stations and major bus terminals connecting it to the rest of India and neighboring Bhutan.
Jalpaiguri is also a significant educational and cultural node. It hosts the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, one of the state's oldest technical institutions, and the Jalpaiguri Government Medical College, which began its MBBS program in 2022. The city has produced notable figures in sports, literature, and science, including heptathlete Swapna Barman and author Samaresh Majumdar. With a 2011 census population of 107,341, the city continues to function as a critical metropolitan center for North Bengal.
