In short: Jersey City began as a 17th-century Dutch settlement purchased from the Lenape for beer and kettles. Today, it stands as a bustling transportation hub and financial center nicknamed Wall Street West, boasting a diverse population and some of the highest apartment rents in the United States.

The land now known as Jersey City was originally part of Lenapehoking, inhabited by the Lenape people. In 1630, Michael Reyniersz Pauw secured a land grant for the area, purchasing it from the Lenape with items including wampum, cloth, guns, and half a barrel of beer. This settlement, named Pavonia, faced significant turmoil during the 17th century, including the devastating Kieft's War in 1643 and the Peach War in 1655. Stability arrived in 1660 with the establishment of the village of Bergen, which featured the first town square in North America and served as the state's earliest local civil government.

Following the English capture of the region in 1664, the area was renamed New Jersey by Sir George Carteret. By the 19th century, the city began its rapid evolution into an industrial and transit hub. Alexander Hamilton, a key figure in the city's early development, envisioned a great metropolis rising on the Hudson's western banks. His efforts helped form the Associates of the Jersey Company, which laid out the city's grid and squares. The 1834 opening of the New Jersey Rail Road and the expansion of the Morris Canal further cemented the city's role as a vital distribution point for coal and iron.

The city's identity was forged through consolidation, notably the 1870 formation of Greater Jersey City, which merged Bergen City and Hudson City, followed by the 1873 addition of Greenville Township. Beyond its industrial roots, the city served as a critical terminal for the Underground Railroad, with an estimated 60,000 former slaves passing through on their journey to freedom. Today, the city is a dense, ethnically diverse urban center where over 40 languages are spoken in more than 52% of households. Its waterfront redevelopment has attracted finance and tech industries, leading to its modern reputation as a high-cost, high-growth destination.
