In short: Four months after Pearl Harbor, the United States was reeling from a string of Pacific defeats. To restore national confidence, Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle led 16 B-25 bombers on an audacious, high-stakes strike against the Japanese heartland. It was a mission that defied conventional military logic and changed the war.

In early 1942, the Allied position was dire. While German U-boats dominated the Atlantic and the Japanese military expanded unchecked across the Pacific, the American public faced a relentless stream of grim news. President Franklin D. Roosevelt demanded a strike that would demonstrate American resolve and force Japanese leaders to divert critical military resources back to their home islands for defense.

The operation, dubbed Special Aviation Project No. 1, was a joint Army-Navy endeavor. Doolittle and Captain Francis S. Low selected the B-25 Mitchell bomber for the mission, as it was the only aircraft capable of the task. To maximize range, the planes were stripped of radios and defensive turrets, with the latter replaced by broomsticks painted to resemble tail guns. Each bomber carried 2,000 pounds of explosives, and pilots utilized a simplified, inexpensive bombsight designed by Captain C. Ross Greening to prioritize fuel economy over precision.

On April 18, 1942, Doolittle launched the 16 bombers from the deck of the USS Hornet. Although the raid caused minimal material damage, it achieved its psychological objectives. The attack compelled Japan to retain four army fighter groups for home defense that were desperately needed in the South Pacific. Furthermore, the mission forced Japan to expand its defensive perimeter, inadvertently increasing the vulnerability of its own supply lines. The raid served as a vital morale booster, proving that the American military could strike the heart of the Japanese empire despite the overwhelming odds of the era.
