How a teenage prodigy became one of America's most valuable soccer exports
In short: In 2017, Joshua Sargent was just 17 when he became the youngest U.S. player to score at a FIFA U-20 World Cup. Today, his rapid ascent from Missouri youth soccer to a multi-million pound Premier League transfer tells a story of unprecedented talent and high-stakes movement.
Joshua Thomas Sargent's career is defined by a meteoric rise through the international ranks. Born in O'Fallon, Missouri, on February 20, 2000, he was already a standout talent by his teens. In 2017, he achieved the rare feat of being included in both the U-17 and U-20 World Cup squads in the same year, and later became the only American to appear in under-17, under-20, and senior camps within a single calendar year.
His professional journey saw him move from German club FC Schalke 04 training to making a historic debut for Werder Bremen. On December 7, 2018, Sargent scored with his very first touch of the match, setting a club record for the fastest goal by a debutant. This performance helped pave the way for a high-profile move to the English Premier League with Norwich City in August 2021, a transfer valued at approximately €9.5 million.
Sargent's value continued to escalate as he proved his consistency in the EFL Championship. Following a prolific 2024–25 season where he was named Norwich City's Player of the Season and earned a spot in the EFL Team of the Season, he moved to Toronto FC in February 2026. The transfer fee for the move was reported to be an initial £15.5 million, with potential add-ons pushing the total beyond £20 million—a figure that could rival the record-breaking transfer of Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC.
