From the International Space Station to a historic resignation
In short: Julie Payette was one of only four people selected from over 5,000 applicants to join Canada's astronaut corps. After logging more than 25 days in space and serving as the nation's 29th governor general, her tenure ended in a scandal that left a lasting mark on Canadian history.
Julie Payette’s career is defined by extreme technical achievement. Having earned qualifications from both the University of Toronto and McGill University, she focused on artificial intelligence's branch known as computational linguistics. By 1992, she joined the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), eventually becoming a mission specialist on two spaceflights: STS-96 and STS-127. During her first mission in 1999, she became the first Canadian to participate in an International Space Station assembly mission, operating the Canadarm robotic arm while traveling over six million kilometres in just nine days.
In 2017, Payette transitioned from science to statesmanship, becoming the 29th governor general of Canada. However, her transition was marked by friction. While she championed scientific literacy—publicly criticizing creationism and climate change denial as 'refreshing' to some observers—she faced internal accusations of creating a 'toxic, verbally abusive workplace.' A review initiated by the Privy Council Office found that she had belittled and publicly humiliated staff at Rideau Hall.
Payette’s departure in January 2021 was historic: she became the first governor general to resign due to scandal. Her tenure also faced scrutiny over her work ethic, with critics noting she visited fewer provinces than her predecessors and oversaw a review of patronage activities that left several non-profit groups without support. Despite these controversies, Payette remains a figure of immense technical distinction, having logged 1,300 hours of flight time and served as the CSA's chief astronaut from 2000 to 2007.
Her story highlights the complexities of leadership roles where personal temperament can collide with public mandate. While she advocated for a 'higher goal' and common good in her inaugural speech, the internal reality of her management style led to her becoming the first governor general to leave a vacancy upon resignation.
