Philadelphia launches a digital dashboard to track municipal services in the Kensington neighborhood

In short: Kensington has long been defined by its complex history, from industrial decline to the challenges of an open-air drug market. Now, the City of Philadelphia is attempting to bring transparency to its intervention efforts through a new, data-driven dashboard that monitors public safety, wellness, and community quality of life.

The Kensington Dashboard, launched by the Mayor’s Office of Philly Stat 360, serves as a centralized tool for residents to monitor how city departments are addressing neighborhood conditions. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker has prioritized the restoration of order in the area, and this platform is designed to make that interdepartmental work visible. By aggregating 30 distinct metrics, the tool provides a window into municipal operations, ranging from school crossing guards and park maintenance to narcotics arrests and shelter bed usage.

The neighborhood itself remains a place of stark contrasts. While parts of the area have faced significant disinvestment and the impact of a long-standing drug trade—notably near the intersection of Kensington and Allegheny avenues—other sections, particularly south of Lehigh Avenue, are undergoing rapid gentrification. This shift has turned parts of the neighborhood into hotspots for real-estate development, with new housing unit counts in ZIP codes 19122 and 19125 rivaling those in Center City between 2021 and 2024. These demographic and economic pressures exist alongside a diverse population that includes long-standing Irish, Hispanic, and African American communities.

The dashboard is part of a broader strategy to use data to guide decision-making and improve government responsiveness. Users can filter data by month or year to track trends in quality of life, such as demolition efforts and service requests. This initiative builds on the previous Kensington Community Revival Dashboard, reflecting a shift in how the city communicates its efforts to the public. By offering an interactive experience, the administration aims to foster transparency in a neighborhood where boundaries and identities have historically been subject to intense debate and change.
