The short-lived republic born from a coup and a gunpoint signature
In short: In 1970, a Cambodian coup transformed a monarchy into a US-backed military dictatorship. Driven by economic instability and North Vietnamese presence, the Khmer Republic rose through a dramatic power struggle, only to collapse five years later under the weight of civil war, corruption, and a rising communist insurgency.
The Khmer Republic was formally established on 9 October 1970, following an 18 March coup that overthrew the government of Norodom Sihanouk. The transition from a monarchy to a centralised republic was marked by intense political drama; during the coup, Prince Sirik Matak reportedly compelled a weeping Prime Minister Lon Nol to sign the necessary documents at gunpoint. This new regime was characterized by a far-right, militaristic nature and was plagued by internal power struggles, most notably between Lon Nol and Sirik Matak.
The republic's survival was threatened by multiple fronts. Internally, it faced opposition from the National United Front of Kampuchea (FUNK), an alliance between Sihanouk's supporters and the Communist Party of Kampuchea. Externally, the Khmer National Armed Forces (FANK) struggled to combat the Cambodian People's National Liberation Armed Forces (CPNLAF), who were backed by the North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) and the Viet Cong. Despite significant military and financial aid from the United States, the FANK was hampered by incompetence and systemic corruption, such as officers claiming salaries for non-existent troops.
The military landscape shifted dramatically as the conflict escalated. The Royal Khmer Armed Forces (FARK), which numbered approximately 35,000 troops at the time of the coup, was expanded into the FANK, reaching an estimated 150,000 men by the end of 1970. However, the republic could not withstand the mounting pressure. On 17 April 1975, the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh, bringing an end to the republic and briefly restoring the monarchy before declaring Democratic Kampuchea in early 1976.
