The gateway to the Air Force is more than just a training ground

Located in Bexary County, Texas, Lackland Air Force Base functions as the primary entry point for the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard. Known as the 'Gateway to the Air Force,' it is the only location for enlisted Basic Military Training (BMT). Since 2020, this mission has expanded to include the training of recruits for the United States Space Force. The training itself has evolved over decades; for instance, in 2008, the BMT course was expanded by two weeks to incorporate more air base defense and rudimentary skills, resulting in the current 8.5-week curriculum.
The base's complexity stems from its diverse technical training squadrons. The 341st Training Squadron manages military working dog and handler programs for the Department of Defense and federal agencies, while the 344th Training Squadron hosts over 10,000 students annually across disciplines like logistics, contracting, and cryptology. The base also fosters international engagement, teaching 37 technical courses in both English and Spanish to students from more than 22 countries every year.
Historically, the base has navigated significant transitions. Originally part of Kelly Field, construction began on June 15, 1941. In 2010, Lackland merged with Fort Sam Houston and Randolph AFB to form Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA). While it was once home to the Air Force Officer Training School, that program relocated to Maxwell AFB, Alabama, in September 1993. Today, the base remains a vital center for both combat readiness and specialized technical education.
