Larry Holmes spent his career in the shadow of giants before becoming a legend
In short: Before becoming a heavyweight champion with a 69-win career, Larry Holmes was a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. He struggled to find his own identity while working for the sport's biggest icons, eventually stepping out of their shadow to dominate the heavyweight division for seven years.
Born in 1949 in Cuthbert, Georgia, Larry Holmes moved to Easton, Pennsylvania, at age five. Growing up in a family that relied on welfare, he left school in the seventh grade to work at a car wash and in a quarry. He did not begin boxing until age 18, eventually turning professional in 1973. Early in his career, he served as a sparring partner for heavyweight titans Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, an experience he later credited with giving him the confidence that he could compete at the highest level.
Holmes’s path to the top was marked by a 28-bout winning streak that culminated in a 1978 victory over Ken Norton for the World Boxing Council heavyweight crown. He defended this title 17 times between 1978 and 1983, defeating notable fighters such as Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks, and Gerry Cooney. In 1980, he faced his former mentor, Muhammad Ali, in a fight that proved emotionally difficult for Holmes, who had to pummel the man he considered a friend. He won the bout in 11 rounds, cementing his status as the premier heavyweight of his era.
In 1983, Holmes relinquished his WBC title due to disagreements with promoter Don King, though he continued to hold the International Boxing Federation title. His quest to match Rocky Marciano’s perfect 49–0 record ended in 1985 when he lost a 15-round decision to Michael Spinks. Despite several comeback attempts against fighters like Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Oliver McCall, he never regained a major title. Holmes retired for good in 2002 with 69 wins and 6 losses, later earning induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.
