In short: Nestled between the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers, Lu'an is a prefecture-level city in western Anhui with roots stretching back to the Han Dynasty. Known for its rich mineral wealth, famous green tea, and strategic location at the foot of the Dabie Mountains, it serves as a vital regional logistics hub.

Lu'an, historically referred to as Gaocheng, occupies a unique position in western Anhui. Its name, established in 121 AD by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, signifies 'safety in the six places.' The city's geography is defined by a trapezoidal terrain that transitions from the flat North China Plain in the north to the rugged Dabie Mountains in the south. This diverse landscape supports a humid subtropical climate, characterized by four distinct seasons and significant annual precipitation, much of which falls between June and August.

The region is exceptionally resource-rich, boasting over 40 types of metallic and non-metallic minerals. The Huoqiu Iron Mine is particularly notable, with proven reserves exceeding 2 billion tons, ranking it fifth in China. Beyond industry, Lu'an is celebrated for its cultural heritage and agricultural specialties. Lu'an Guapian, a prized green tea mentioned in the Tang Dynasty's 'The Book of Tea,' remains a hallmark of the area. Local culinary traditions, such as Jinzhai chestnut cakes and Shaobing, further reflect the region's long-standing cultural identity.

Modern Lu'an is a product of significant administrative evolution. Following various shifts in jurisdiction from the Qin Dynasty through the Qing era, the contemporary city was officially established in March 2000. Today, it governs three municipal districts and four counties, serving a population of over 4.3 million. The city has developed a robust infrastructure network, including multiple railways and expressways, to support its role as a regional trade center. With its combination of historical depth, industrial potential, and natural beauty, Lu'an remains a significant, if often overlooked, pillar of the Anhui province.
