In short: Born from the urgent need for a new tank during the Korean War, the M47 Patton was a stopgap design that became a global workhorse. While it never fired a shot for the United States, it served as the backbone of NATO forces for nearly fifteen years.

The M47 Patton emerged as an interim solution when the U.S. Army realized the T42 tank could not be completed in time for the Korean War. Developed by the Detroit Arsenal, the design combined the M46 hull with the T42 turret. Despite its technical immaturity, the Army prioritized the M47 for its superior firepower and armor. Production began in 1951, but the project was immediately hampered by logistical issues, including a faulty hydraulic turret-control mechanism that kept the tanks from the front lines in Korea.

By the time production quality improved in 1952, the Army had scrapped plans to deploy the M47 to Korea, opting instead to station them in Europe and at home. The tank was officially standardized in May 1952, with a total production run of 8,576 units ending in November 1953. However, the tank's service life in the U.S. was brief. As the improved M48 Patton arrived in 1953, the M47 was declared limited standard by 1955 and obsolete by 1957, eventually being relegated to target practice or replaced by anti-tank missiles.

While the U.S. military moved on, the M47 found a second life abroad. Through the Major Defense Acquisition Program, 8,552 tanks—roughly 99.7 percent of the total fleet—were transferred to allies, including Italy, Turkey, and West Germany. These tanks saw extensive combat in various international conflicts, from the Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War to the Iran-Iraq War. Many nations continued to modernize the platform for decades, with variants featuring 105 mm guns and advanced fire control systems remaining in service well into the 1990s.
