In short: Flowing 980 kilometers through Borneo, the Mahakam River is more than a waterway. It is a critical habitat for endangered dolphins, a hub for ancient Hindu kingdoms, and one of Indonesia's most productive hydrocarbon basins. Discover how this equatorial giant shapes the landscape and the lives of those nearby.

Originating in the highlands of Cemaru at 1,681 meters, the Mahakam River cuts through the heart of East Kalimantan before reaching the Makassar Strait. Its path is defined by a complex geography, traversing tertiary basins and a vast, marshy lowland plain. This middle section is home to approximately 76 lakes, including the three primary reservoirs of Jempang, Semayang, and Melintang. These wetlands act as essential water storage, though they face ongoing challenges from sedimentation and subsidence.

The river's climate is governed by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which drives a bimodal rainfall pattern with peaks in May and December. This tropical environment supports immense biodiversity, including 147 indigenous freshwater fish species and the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, known locally as the Pesut. The delta, covering 1,800 square kilometers, serves as a vital sanctuary for birds and mangroves, though it has been heavily impacted by the conversion of land into shrimp ponds and industrial development.

Beyond its ecological significance, the Mahakam has been a cradle of civilization and industry. It hosted the Kutai Martadipura kingdom, considered Indonesia's oldest, dating back to 350–400 AD. Today, the region is a powerhouse of energy production, holding roughly 3 billion barrels of oil and 30 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves. Despite this economic importance, the river faces severe environmental pressure; studies have identified heavy metal contamination in fish and sharp increases in water pollution, highlighting the tension between industrial growth and the preservation of this essential natural resource.
