From selling watches door to door to owning global sports empires
In short: Malcolm Glazer built a multi-billion dollar empire from a humble beginning in watch repair. Known as "the leprechaun," this American businessman transitioned from selling watches on the street to owning major franchises like Manchester United and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, managing a vast portfolio of international holdings.
Born in 1928 to immigrants in Rochester, New York, Glazer's business journey began at age 8 in his father's watch parts business. Following his father's death when Malcolm was 15, he sold watches door to door to support his family. This early experience in sales and repair eventually led him to establish the First Allied Corporation in 1984, a holding company that managed a diverse array of interests ranging from real estate and banking to television stations and even motorcycle manufacturers like Harley-Davidson.
Glazer's sports ownership was marked by both record-breaking acquisitions and significant controversy. In 1995, he purchased the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $192 million, a league record at the time. Under the Glazer family's tenure, the Buccaneers saw a rise in fortunes, including winning Super Bowl XXXVII and Super Bowl LV. However, his acquisition of Manchester United F.C. between 2003 and 2005 via a £790m takeover sparked intense protests from fans. Many supporters voiced opposition regarding how the club's cash reserves were utilised and the massive debt shifted onto its balance sheet to finance the acquisition.
Despite the friction in Manchester, the Glazer family has maintained control of the club through their 90% stake, which was split equally among Malcolm's six children following his death in 2014. While the family has been involved in significant philanthropy—such as donating $5 million to the Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa—the lack of principal debt repayment or infrastructure investment at Manchester United remains a point of contention for supporters.
