From Montevideo to Manchester: the rapid rise of Uruguayan midfield specialist Manuel Ugarte
In short: A versatile defensive midfielder, Manuel Ugarte has transitioned from a 15-year-old professional in Uruguay to a high-value Premier League star. Known for his combative style and ability to win possession, his career has seen him navigate elite leagues in Portugal and France before joining Manchester United.
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Manuel Ugarte Ribeiro began his professional journey in the youth ranks of City Park before joining Fénix. At only 15 years and 233 days old, he set a record on 4 December 2016 as the 21st century's youngest professional footballer in Uruguay. Originally a striker, Ugarte was eventually converted into a midfielder, a role that would define his career.
His ascent through European football was marked by significant transfer fees. After a successful stint at Famalicão in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, he moved to Sporting CP in August 2021 for €6.5 million for half of his economic rights. His performance in Portugal, including a high number of tackles and interceptions in the UEFA Champions League, led to a €60 million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023.
At PSG, Ugarte proved his defensive prowess, topping the 2023–24 Ligue 1 charts with 98 tackles in just 25 league games. Despite facing tactical scrutiny from manager Luis Enrique, his impact was undeniable. A transfer fee of roughly €50 million, which could reach €60 million including add-ons, saw him move to Manchester United in August 2024. His international career with Uruguay includes being named in the 2024 Copa América Team of the Tournament.
Ugarte's career has not been without setbacks. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he suffered an ACL injury during a group-stage match against Spain on 27 June 2026, an injury that sidelined him for several months.
