In short: Perched atop Beacon Hill in Boston, the Massachusetts State House serves as the seat of government for the Commonwealth. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, this iconic building houses the state legislature and the governor's office, standing as a testament to early American civic design and history.

The Massachusetts State House, often called the New State House, was designed by architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in January 1798. Its construction cost $133,333, which significantly exceeded the original budget. Bulfinch drew inspiration from two London landmarks: William Chambers's Somerset House and James Wyatt's Pantheon. The building sits on 6.7 acres of land that was once a pasture owned by John Hancock, the state's first elected governor. In 1795, Paul Revere presided over the Masonic cornerstone ceremony, and his company later covered the original leaking wood dome with copper in 1802.

The structure has undergone several major expansions, including a significant project in 1895 led by Charles Brigham and the addition of east and west wings in 1917. The dome, which was gilded with gold leaf in 1874, was painted gray during World War II to prevent reflections during blackouts. It was re-gilded in 1969 for $36,000 and again in 1997 using 23k gold at an estimated cost of $300,000. At its peak sits a wooden pine cone, a symbol representing the importance of the lumber industry in early colonial times and the state of Maine, which was then a district of the Commonwealth.

Inside, the building serves as a repository of history and art. Doric Hall features statues and busts of figures like George Washington and John Hancock, while the House Chamber displays the Sacred Cod, a symbol of the early fishing economy. The main doors of the building are reserved for rare ceremonial occasions, such as visits by foreign heads of state or the departure of a governor on their final day in office. The site also houses the Press Gallery, established in 1909, and serves as a headquarters for numerous veterans' organizations, cementing its role as a central hub for the Commonwealth's civic and social life.
