How a Swedish university town birthed the architects of modern extreme metal
In short: In 1987, a group of musicians in Umeå, Sweden, began experimenting with rhythms so complex they would eventually define an entire subgenre. From severed fingertips to Grammy nominations, the story of Meshuggah is a masterclass in musical innovation and sheer persistence.
Formed in the northern Swedish university town of Umeå, Meshuggah’s origins are rooted in the late 1980s. While guitarist Fredrik Thordendal had previously played in a band called Metallien in 1985, the definitive Meshuggah lineup emerged in 1987. The band's name itself carries deep linguistic roots, taken by vocalist Jens Kidman from a Yiddish word for "crazy," which is derived from the Hebrew word מְשֻׁגָּע.
The band's journey has been marked by both technical evolution and physical hardship. During their formative years, the group faced significant setbacks when Thordendal severed the tip of his left middle finger and drummer Tomas Haake suffered a hand injury in a router accident. Despite these obstacles, the band pioneered a highly complex musical language characterized by polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. This approach was so influential that it inspired the development of the 'djent' subgenre in the late 2000s.
Their discography reflects a constant state of metamorphosis. Early works like the 1989 EP Psykisk Testbild featured only 1,000 copies, but later releases achieved significant international recognition. The 2002 album Nothing became the first release from Nuclear Blast Records to enter the Billboard 200, while the 2018 track "Clockworks" earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Whether through the use of programmed drums on Catch Thirtythree or the heavy, dark atmosphere of Nothing, Meshuggah remains a cornerstone of progressive and extreme metal.
