A Buddhist monk is carving a road through the Himalayas alone
In short: In one of the world's highest populated valleys, an isolated community faces a grueling wait for infrastructure. While government efforts stall, a 78-year-old monk has taken it upon himself to break the mountain's hold.
Zanskar is an ancient Himalayan realm where approximately 12,000 people live in total autarky. For decades, the Indian government has attempted to build a road along the Zanskar River's meanders on cliff faces, but progress has been agonizingly slow since work began roughly 40 years ago.
The documentary follows Tsultrim Chonjor, a Buddhist monk who has spent two years operating a bulldozer to carve a path through the mountains. His goal is to cross the Shingo La Pass—located over 5,000 meters above sea level—to connect the village of Kargyak to the rest of the world.
