In short: In 2007, Montenegro entered the footballing world as a brand-new entity. After decades of political shifts, the nation faced a daunting start: a default ranking of 199th in the world. Yet, this young squad quickly began carving out its own identity on the international stage.

The Montenegro national football team emerged following the 200 6 Montenegrin independence referendum. As the nation transitioned away from the union of Serbia and Montenegro, the footballing landscape underwent a complex reorganization. Initially, Serbia was scheduled to represent the combined territory for the Euro 2008 qualifying stage. However, because the Montenegrin Football Association was not ratified by FIFA before the competition began, Montenegro's entry into major tournaments was delayed.

The team's official journey began in early 2007. After receiving provisional UEFA membership in October 2006, the Montenegro FA was granted full membership on 26 January 2007. By 31 May 2007, Montenegro was officially recognized as FIFA's 208th member. Their first recognized friendly match took place on 24 March 2007, against Hungary in Podgorica. In a memorable debut, the team won 2–1, with striker Mirko Vučinić scoring the nation's first international goal in the 62nd minute.

The team's history is marked by both significant victories and intense volatility. In 2012, they achieved a 6–0 win against San Marino, their largest victory to date. Conversely, the 2015 campaign against Russia saw a match abandoned after 67 minutes due to crowd violence and projectiles hitting players, resulting in a 3–0 forfeit victory for Russia. Today, the team continues to compete, utilizing the Podgorica City Stadium and the 54,000 square metre Camp FSCG training ground, which was established in 2007.
