In short: What happens when a technical glitch becomes a core gameplay feature? In 2005, Mortal Kombat transitioned from the arena to an expansive action-adventure world. While intended as a serious expansion of the series' lore, its most iconic multiplayer mode actually started as a mistake during development.

Developed by Midway and released in September 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was designed to move beyond traditional fighting mechanics. Creative director Ed Boon aimed to create an adventure game that avoided 'button smashing' by implementing a multi-directional combat system. This allowed players to attack enemies fluidly from any direction while maintaining combo chains even after launching opponents into the air.

The game’s narrative serves as a retelling of Mortal Kombat II, following Liu Kang and Kung Lao as they journey through Earthrealm and the nightmarish realm of Outworld. The plot involves stopping the sorcerer Shang Tsung from conquering Earth without winning a tournament—an act deemed 'cheating' by Raiden. While praised for its transition to an adventure format and its co-op mode, critics were divided on its high difficulty, backtracking, and a climax that some found incomprehensible due to frequent plot twists.

Interestingly, the game’s versus mode was not a planned feature; it originated from a bug discovered by testers. Despite this accidental beginning, the developers integrated it into the adventure framework. Beyond its critical acclaim, the production moved over a million units and secured the 2005 Satellite Award for Best Action/Adventure Game.

The game remains a unique entry in the franchise because it balances 'brain food' mechanics—like puzzle-solving via environmental hazards (pits or rotating spikes)—with the visceral 'brain rot' appeal of Fatalities and Brutalities. It even included an emulated arcade perfect version of Mortal Kombat II, bridging the gap between its 1993 roots and its 2005 evolution.
