A Northern California mountain town shaped by ancient footpaths and volcanic soil
In short: Nestled on the flanks of a namesake volcano, the city of Mount Shasta serves as a gateway to the wilderness. From its origins as a stop for gold seekers and stagecoach travelers to its modern identity as a base for outdoor adventure, this community carries a rich, layered history.
The city of Mount Shasta, located in Siskiyou County, sits at an elevation of approximately 3,600 feet on the southwest slopes of its namesake volcano. The area was historically within the range of the Okwanuchu tribe, whose ancient footpaths formed the foundation for the Siskiyou Trail. This route became a critical corridor for Euro-American trappers in the 1820s and saw a surge in traffic following the 1851 gold discovery in nearby Yreka. By the late 1850s, the area began to develop as a travel hub, eventually hosting Sisson’s Hotel to accommodate tourists and climbers.
The town’s evolution was accelerated by the 1887 completion of the Central Pacific Railroad, which solidified its role in lumbering and tourism. Originally known as Strawberry Valley and later Berryvale, the settlement was renamed Sisson in 1886 to honor Justin Hinckley Sisson, a local businessman who donated land for the town site and the railroad station. It was not until 1925 that the community officially adopted the name City of Mount Shasta. Today, the city remains a base for recreation, including skiing, fishing, and hiking, while maintaining a unique climate that receives significant winter snowfall compared to the surrounding semiarid region.
Geologically, the city rests on Quaternary alluvium, which is likely underlain by volcanic clastic rock deposited during the volcano's development. The local hydrology is characterized by shallow groundwater, often found near native black peat soil. This environment supports a diverse population of 3,223 residents as of the 2020 census. The city’s governance structure includes a five-member council, with a mayor and mayor pro tempore selected annually. Despite its small size, the city has produced notable figures, including author Anita Loos, who was born there in 1888, and NFL athlete Jason Sehorn, a 1989 high school graduate.
