Why this Bangladeshi industrial hub is known as the Dundee of the East
In short: Located just 16 kilometers from Dhaka, Narayanganj serves as a vital engine for Bangladesh's economy. Known for its deep-rooted history in the jute trade and textile manufacturing, this city of nearly one million people bridges the gap between colonial-era industrialization and modern urban governance in the heart of the nation.
The city owes its name to Bicon Lal Pandey, a Hindu religious leader also known as Lakshmi Narayan Thakur. After the Battle of Plassey, Pandey leased the land from the British East India Company in 1766. He eventually designated the riverfront markets as Devottor property, meaning they were bequeathed to support the worship of the god Narayan, effectively anchoring the city's identity in religious devotion and trade.
By the late 19th century, Narayanganj had become a sophisticated node for infrastructure. The municipality was incorporated in 1876, followed by the establishment of a post office in 1866, telegraph services in 1877, and telephone access via the Bank of Bengal in 1882. This rapid modernization supported its rise as the 'Dundee of Bangladesh,' a moniker earned through its dense concentration of jute mills, mirroring the industrial legacy of the original Scottish 'Juteopolis.'
Today, the city functions as a unified corporation established on May 5, 2011, which merged three former municipalities: Narayanganj, Siddhirganj, and Kadam Rasul. Under the leadership of Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, the city maintains a robust educational and social profile. According to the 2022 Census, the city is home to 967,951 residents across 255,468 households. It boasts a literacy rate of 83.66%, significantly outpacing the national average of 74.80%.
Beyond its economic output, Narayanganj remains a critical transit point within the Greater Dhaka area. It is connected to the capital by three primary roads and a network of four railway stations. With institutions like Government Tolaram College, established in 1937, the city continues to balance its heavy industrial heritage with a focus on academic achievement and urban development, cementing its status as a central pillar of the Bangladeshi economy.
