In short: Formed in 1924 to unify China, the National Revolutionary Army was the Kuomintang's military arm. While it officially represented the Republic of China, it remained a loose collection of semi-autonomous regional forces. Its history reveals a constant, violent struggle between central authority and the persistent power of local warlords.

Established in 1924 to support Sun Yat-sen, the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) was designed to unify China through the Northern Expedition. By 1928, the campaign had nominally succeeded, ending the Warlord Era. However, the victory was deceptive. While the NRA was officially the armed force of the Republic of China, it functioned as a fragmented entity where central control was frequently challenged by regional commanders like Feng Yuxiang and Yan Xishan.

Chiang Kai-shek, who became commander-in-chief in 1925, faced a massive demobilisation dilemma. In 1928, official records listed over 1.5 million soldiers, yet Chiang directly controlled only a fraction of this force. His attempt to centralise power by reducing the military to 65 divisions triggered internal revolts. By 1929, this friction led to open conflict, with Chiang using financial incentives and strategic bribery to dismantle the power bases of his rivals, including the Guangxi clique.

Beyond internal power struggles, the NRA focused on eliminating Communist influence through five major encirclement campaigns between 1930 and 1934. Early efforts against the Jiangxi Soviet failed due to poor coordination, but the fifth campaign succeeded by adopting German-advised blockhouse and scorched-earth tactics. Despite these victories, the NRA remained a complex, often divided organisation. It was not until the 1947 Constitution that the government formally established civilian control, reorganising the NRA into the Republic of China Armed Forces before its eventual retreat to Taiwan in 1949.
