The "abominable mystery" of how flowers conquered the planet
In short: Despite appearing late in Earth's evolutionary history, flowers now make up 90% of all plant species. This documentary uses next-generation macro-lenses and computer animation to decode the biological secrets behind their rapid global domination.
Charles Darwin famously described the development of flowers as an "abominable mystery" due to their sudden and total success in the plant kingdom. The film explores how these seemingly fragile organisms overcame diverse obstacles to thrive in environments ranging from the Namib desert to the peaks of the Alps.
By diving into cellular biology and utilizing high-detail animation, the investigation reveals the specific "superpowers" that allowed flowers to dominate so quickly. It aims to reconstruct the history of the first flowers and explain the mechanisms behind their unrivaled endurance.
