In short: Niagara-on-the-Lake is a rare anomaly in Canadian politics. It is the only municipality in the country where the elected leader is designated as a lord mayor, a title typically associated with the United Kingdom, despite the town's complex history of war and settlement.

Local folklore claims its distinctive name originated when Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, granted it during a 19th-century trip to mark its role as Upper Canada's initial capital. However, historical records show no mayor using the title until Jerry Mussen in the early 1920s. It was only officially legislated in 1969 through the Regional Municipality of Niagara Act.

The settlement's history is defined by its strategic location where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. Founded in 1781 as Butlersburg in honor of Colonel John Butler, it later became West Niagara before being renamed Newark in 1792 by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe. While acting as Upper Canada's premier capital, the legislature relocated to York in 1797 due to Newark's proximity to the U.S. border. border.

The town has faced significant destruction, particularly during the War of 1812. American forces razed the settlement to the ground as they withdrew to Fort Niagara. Today, the area is a hub for historic preservation, featuring sites like Fort George and Fort Mississauga. The town's historic district, noted for its Regency and Classical Revival architecture, was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2003.

Beyond its political quirks, the town is a significant tourist destination. The town contains North America's most ancient active golf course alongside Ontario's earliest Catholic church. It also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad for those traveling further into Upper Canada.
