The Nissan Kicks was born from the streets of Brazil to conquer global roads.
In short: Initially unveiled as a concept at a 2014 Brazilian motor show, the Nissan Kicks evolved into a versatile subcompact crossover. Designed through a collaboration between teams in Japan, California, and Rio de Janeiro, the vehicle has since been adapted into diverse regional variants, including series hybrids and all-wheel-drive configurations.
The Nissan Kicks began its journey as a concept car inspired by Brazilian urban environments. By mid-2016, the first-generation model, built on the V platform, debuted in São Paulo. This initial iteration was designed to replace the Juke in various markets, including the United States and Canada, where it arrived in 2018. To optimize production costs, a separate, larger version using the B0 platform was introduced in India in 2019, sharing its wheelbase with the Renault Captur and Dacia Duster.
Engineering diversity defines the Kicks lineup. While standard models typically feature a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, the e-Power variant offers a distinct series hybrid experience. Launched in Thailand in 2020, this system uses a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine solely as a generator to power an electric motor, which drives the front wheels. This setup provides a unique driving dynamic without the need for external charging. Over time, the vehicle has received multiple facelifts and interior upgrades, such as the integration of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and advanced safety systems like Nissan ProPilot Assist.
The vehicle's global footprint is extensive, with production and sales tailored to local demands. From the Japanese market, which gained an all-wheel-drive option in 2022, to the specialized trims found in Mexico, Argentina, and Taiwan, the Kicks has proven highly adaptable. However, it has faced scrutiny; for instance, a 2018 test by a Mexican automotive magazine highlighted stability concerns in specific trims lacking electronic stability programs. Despite such challenges, the Kicks remains a significant subcompact offering, with the second generation launching in North America in 2024 and the Kait nameplate appearing in Brazil by 2025.
