How the Detroit Auto Show evolved from a regional display to a global stage
In short: Once a modest local gathering, the Detroit Auto Show transformed into a premier international event that shapes the automotive industry. From its 1899 origins to modern test tracks and high-stakes unveilings, the show has navigated economic shifts, pandemics, and the rise of consumer electronics to remain a vital industry fixture.
The Detroit Auto Show, now known as the Detroit Auto Show, traces its roots to 1899, when William E. Metzger helped organize only the second event of its kind globally, following the 1898 Paris Auto Show. For its first several decades, the exhibition maintained a strictly regional focus. This changed in 1957 when international carmakers first exhibited, and the event was officially renamed the North American International Auto Show in 1989 after a successful effort by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association to attract global unveilings.
Since 1965, the show has been hosted at Huntington Place, formerly known as Cobo Center, occupying nearly 1 million square feet of space. The event has seen significant fluctuations in attendance, reaching a record 838,066 visitors in 2003. Its influence is underscored by its status as the first U.S. auto show sanctioned by the OICA. Beyond static displays, the show has increasingly integrated interactive experiences, such as the Powering Michigan EV Experience and various off-road courses that allow attendees to ride in new electric and gasoline-powered vehicles.
The event has faced modern challenges, including the rise of the Consumer Electronics Show, which now competes for vehicle technology debuts, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 editions. Despite these pressures, the show remains a significant economic driver, estimated to generate over $500 million for the local economy. It continues to adapt, shifting between January and September timeframes and incorporating outdoor festivals like Motor Bella to maintain its relevance in an evolving automotive landscape.
