In short: Nuhu Ribadu, the pioneer chairman of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, became a national figure for his aggressive pursuit of high-ranking officials. From charging governors to jailing his own superior, his career reflects the volatile intersection of law enforcement, political ambition, and the fight against systemic corruption.

Born in Yola in 1960, Nuhu Ribadu built a career as a lawyer and police officer before being appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 to lead the newly formed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). During his tenure, Ribadu transformed the agency into a formidable force, indicting prominent bankers, ministers, and state governors. His most notable success involved the conviction of Tafa Balogun, the then-Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force, who was forced to return £150 million as part of a plea bargain. Ribadu’s approach was uncompromising; he famously claimed to have accepted a $15 million bribe from a governor only to use the funds as evidence in a subsequent prosecution, though the accused later contested this account.

Ribadu’s aggressive tactics eventually drew intense political scrutiny. In 2007, he was ordered to attend a mandatory training course at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, a move widely criticized by figures like Wole Soyinka as a politically motivated attempt to sideline him. By December 2008, he was dismissed from the Nigerian Police Force, leading him to live in exile until 2010. During his time away, he served on a United Nations committee auditing governance in Afghanistan. Upon his return to Nigeria, he transitioned into electoral politics, running for president in 2011 and making multiple bids for the governorship of Adamawa State.

In recent years, Ribadu has re-emerged as a central figure in the Nigerian security apparatus. Appointed as the National Security Adviser by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, he has continued to focus on financial oversight. In March 2024, he oversaw the detention of cryptocurrency exchange employees linked to alleged market manipulation. His career, marked by both high-profile anti-corruption victories and complex political shifts, remains a significant case study in the challenges of institutional reform within Nigeria's evolving political landscape.
