The character who was erased to make room for Spock
In short: In the 1965 pilot of Star Trek, a woman held the rank of second-in-command. When the network rejected the episode, her character was largely scrubbed from history—her logical demeanor and cool temperament were instead merged into the iconic Vulcan, Spock.
Number One first appeared in 'The Cage', the 1965 pilot for the original Star Trek series. Portrayed by Majel Barrett, she served as Commander Una Chin-Riley under Captain Christopher Pike. However, NBC executives rejected this pilot, citing its "too cerebral" nature and their concern that a female senior officer would not appeal to audiences. Following this rejection, a second pilot was produced where Number One was eliminated.
The character's removal remains a point of historical debate among production staff. Executive producer Herb Solow suggested the network was infuriated by casting an unknown actress who was also creator Gene Roddenberry's girlfriend. Conversely, some believe the network simply disliked her performance. Regardless of the motive, aspects of Number One’s personality—specifically her logical nature and calm demeanor—were absorbed into Spock during the regular series run.
The character remained largely absent from canon until 1966, when footage from 'The Cage' was reused in 'The Menagerie'. It took until 2019 for Number One to return to live-action television in Star Trek: Discovery. Modern iterations have expanded her lore, revealing she is Illyrian rather than human and establishing her as a resourceful leader with a secret attraction to Pike.
Her legacy is complex; while she was ranked the 57th most important Starfleet character by Wired in 2016, her presence highlights the era's gender politics. The name 'Una' eventually became canon in 2019, though it first appeared in a non-canonical 2016 novel trilogy as a tribute to author Una McCormack.
