The child who did not speak English until age five
In short: Before she was a fixture of American television, Odette Annable navigated a world of different languages. Born to a Colombian father and a Cuban mother, her early years were defined by a linguistic transition that preceded a prolific career in Hollywood drama and sci-fi.
Born on May 10, 1985, in Los Angeles County, Odette Annable’s early childhood was shaped by a multicultural heritage. With a father of French, Italian, and Swiss descent and a mother from Cuba, her first language was Spanish. It was not until she was five years old that she began learning English, a linguistic foundation that would later serve her in roles ranging from the medical drama House to the sci-fi series Supergirl.
Her journey into acting began almost as soon as she mastered English. At just five years old, she appeared as the Spanish-speaking student Rosa in the film Kindergarten Cop. This early start led to a steady progression through television and film, including roles in October Road, the monster film Cloverfield, and the series Breaking In.
Annable's career is marked by significant character work in major network dramas. She played Dr. Jessica Adams in the Fox series House until its May 2012 finale, and later portrayed Samantha Arias in Supergirl, a character with complex Kryptonian origins. Her versatility has seen her move from the historical setting of The Astronaut Wives Club in 2014 to playing a local barkeep in the 2021 series Walker.
Beyond the screen, her personal life has been documented alongside her professional milestones, including her marriage to actor Dave Annable in October 2010. While the couple announced a separation in October 2019, they later shared news of their reconciliation in August 2020.
