In short: Dick Wolf, the titan of broadcast police drama, broke his own rules to create a half-hour streaming series. By swapping long-form investigation for lean, on-location patrol work, On Call attempted to reinvent a tired genre—only to face a complex reality of mixed reviews and a sudden cancellation.

Created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, On Call marked a significant departure for executive producer Dick Wolf. It was his first streaming television series and his first production in a half-hour format, a move intended to strip away the 'filler' of traditional cop dramas. Filmed on-location in Long Beach, California, the series utilized experimental techniques, mixing traditional cameras with found footage from bodycams, dashcams, and cell phones to heighten the sense of realism. The narrative focuses on Traci Harmon, a senior training officer, and rookie Alex Diaz. Unlike many procedurals that center on detectives, this show emphasizes the daily dangers of patrol officers. This shift was designed to create a 'humane approach' to the genre, though critics were divided. Some praised the chemistry between leads Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente, while others, like Nina Metz of the Chicago Tribune, criticized the show for prioritizing a constant sense of danger over a coherent, practical story. Despite its creative risks, the show faced significant hurdles. While it became the most-watched show on Amazon Prime Video in the United States during its first week, it was canceled in May 2025 after just one season. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television found the cost-plus contract model unsustainable due to lower licensing fees, leading to the show's termination. The series remains in a state of limbo, being shopped to other platforms like Peacock while producers attempt to regain streaming rights.
