The 140-kilometre Pacific Motorway was once known by the iconic name F3 Freeway.
In short: Linking Sydney and Newcastle, the M1 Pacific Motorway is a vital 140-kilometre artery through New South Wales. Though officially rebranded in 2013, it remains deeply embedded in local culture as the F3 Freeway, a name that persisted for decades in government documents and public memory alike.
Planning for a high-speed link between Sydney and Newcastle began in 1952 to replace the aging 1925–30 Pacific Highway. The project evolved significantly over time, with routes shifting to navigate environmental concerns and urban development. For instance, resistance from the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service forced planners to abandon an easier crossing of Mooney Mooney Creek, opting instead for a route through Calga. Similarly, the northern section was moved west of Wyong to avoid the Tuggerah Lakes, and the final alignment bypassed Newcastle entirely to the west of Lake Macquarie.
Construction was a decades-long endeavor, beginning in April 1963 with a 7-kilometre section near the Hawkesbury River. Early segments were operated as toll roads, with a 50-cent toll introduced in 1973 following the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge. These tolls were eventually abolished in 1990 when the Federal Government mandated that national highways receiving direct funding must be toll-free. The motorway’s evolution continued well into the 21st century, with major widening projects and the 2026 completion of an extension from Beresfield to Raymond Terrace.
The motorway’s identity has been as fluid as its construction. In 1973, it was designated as Freeway Route 3, or F3, to provide distinct signage for Sydney’s freeway network. Although this was replaced by the National Highway 1 designation just a year later in 1974, the F3 label proved remarkably resilient. It wasn't until August 2013 that a statewide alphanumeric route scheme officially transitioned the road to the M1 Pacific Motorway marker. Today, the route remains a critical component of the AusLink corridor, serving as a testament to the complex engineering and planning required to connect two major Australian cities.
