In short: As the smallest municipality in the Philippines by land area, Pateros is a dense urban enclave famous for its historic duck-raising industry. While its local production has dwindled, the town remains synonymous with balut, a fertilized duck egg delicacy, and maintains a unique sister-city bond with its namesake in Washington State.

Pateros, the sole municipality within the Metro Manila region, occupies a distinct position in Philippine geography. Originally a barrio of Pasig known as Aguho, it was established as an independent municipality in the early 19th century. The name itself reflects its heritage, derived from the Spanish word for duck, reflecting a long-standing industry that once defined the local economy. By the 1830s, the area was already noted for its massive duck populations, which supported a vibrant trade in eggs and poultry.

The town's culinary identity is anchored by balut, a boiled, fertilized duck embryo that remains a staple of local street food culture. While the local duck-raising industry declined significantly in the 1970s and 1980s due to water pollution in the Pateros River, the town continues to promote the trade through tax incentives for vendors. Beyond food, Pateros is known for manufacturing alfombra, a type of footwear crafted with carpet-like fabric and abaca fiber. The municipal seal itself pays homage to this history, featuring a mallard duck surrounded by ten eggs representing the town's current barangays.

Despite its small size—officially recorded at 2.10 square kilometers—Pateros has been embroiled in long-standing territorial disputes. The local government claims a much larger historical land area of 1,040 hectares, asserting that significant portions of neighboring cities were once part of its jurisdiction. These claims have been the subject of various legal battles, including petitions to the Supreme Court. Even as these disputes continue, the town maintains its cultural ties, including a sister-city relationship established in 2013 with the city of Pateros, Washington, which was named after the Philippine town by an American lieutenant in 1900.
