In short: Deep in the heart of Rome, the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas—known as the Angelicum—serves as the central academic hub for the Dominican Order. Its roots stretch back to 1222, evolving from a simple convent school into a globally recognized institution dedicated to the study of Thomistic philosophy and theology.

The university traces its origins to the Dominican mission of teaching truth, established by Saint Dominic de Guzman in 1214. By 1222, the Order secured the Santa Sabina complex in Rome, where a studium conventuale was founded. This school quickly became a vital center for learning, notably hosting Thomas Aquinas as a regent master starting in 1265. During his tenure, Aquinas taught philosophy and began composing his monumental Summa theologiae, specifically designed to instruct beginners in the Christian religion.

As the institution grew, it underwent several transformations, relocating to the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. By 1577, thanks to funding from Juan Solano, it was reorganized as the Collegium Divi Thomae, modeled after the College of St. Gregory in Spain. This era saw the college become a focal point for intense theological debates, including the Molinist controversy regarding divine grace, and a center for linguistic projects, such as Giuseppe Ciantes' bilingual edition of the Summa contra Gentiles in Latin and Hebrew.

The college's influence persisted through the centuries, even as it navigated political shifts and the rise of Enlightenment rationalism. In the late 18th century, Salvatore Roselli’s work at the college helped lay the groundwork for the 19th-century revival of Thomism. Following a proposal by Vincenzo Nardini in 1904, the institution was officially transformed into an international university in 1908. Today, it continues to serve both religious and lay students, maintaining its commitment to the Dominican tradition of contemplation and the transmission of knowledge.
