In short: In September 2025, Princess Akiko of Mikasa became the head of her imperial branch. She is the first woman born into the imperial family to achieve this role since Princess Sumiko, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the Mikasa-no-miya line.

Born on 20 December 1981, Princess Akiko is a member of the Japanese Imperial House and the first daughter of Princess Nobuko and Prince Tomohito of Mikasa. Her lineage connects her to significant political figures, including her uncle, Japan's 92nd prime minister Tarō Asō, and her great-grandfather, the 45th prime minister Shigeru Yoshida.

Beyond her royal duties, Akiko is a highly accomplished academic. She earned a BA in History from Gakushuin University and a DPhil in Japanese art history from the University of Oxford in 2011. Under the supervision of Timothy Clark and Dame Jessica Rawson, her doctoral studies examined nineteenth-century Western fascination with Japanese art and the British Museum's William Anderson Collection. She is only the second member of the Japanese imperial household to earn a doctorate, following Prince Akishino, who earned a PhD in Ornithology in 1996.

Her academic interests have translated into significant international cultural work. She has been involved in research and exhibitions related to Japonism and has maintained deep ties to Turkey through the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology. In September 2025, an Ankara gathering revealed plans for a fresh archaeological dig at Şanlıurfa Province's Ayanlar Höyük site, exploring a significant human evolutionary transition from approximately 12,000 years ago.

Akiko's leadership of the Mikasa-no-miya branch follows the death of her grandmother, Princess Mikasa. This transition makes her the first princess by birth to succeed as the head of an imperial branch in 144 years, a distinction last held by Princess Sumiko of the Katsura-no-miya branch.
