In short: In 1971, Punta Cana was so secluded it had no roads or harbors. To reach the new hotels, travelers had to fly into a literal flat piece of land. Today, that remote airstrip has evolved into a private aviation titan that handles 60% of the Dominican Republic's air arrivals.

The transformation of Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is a study in infrastructure-led development. In 1971, the area was inaccessible by land, forcing the first tourists to land on a rudimentary airstrip with no terminal or runway. This geographical isolation meant that air travel wasn't just a convenience; it was the only lifeline for the burgeoning tourism industry. By the late 1970s, even with a new road to Higüey, travelers still had to endure the inconvenience of deplaning onto roads to be picked up by shuttles.

The shift to a world-class hub began in earnest in 1983 when Grupo Puntacana inaugurated the airport. It made history as the first privately owned international airport in the world, featuring unique open-air terminals with palm frond roofs. The growth was explosive: by 1984, it was handling its first international flights from Puerto Rico. To accommodate the shift from small propeller planes to heavy jets, the airport underwent a series of rapid expansions, including a runway extension to 7,500 feet in 1986 and the addition of a second runway in 2011.

Today, the airport is a massive commercial engine. During 2023, 60% of the Dominican Republic's total air arrivals occurred here, providing access to 90 airports within 26 nations. It holds a dominant position in the Caribbean, ranking as the second-busiest airport in the region, surpassed only by Puerto Rico's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. While it currently serves as a primary gateway for global leisure travel, it remains on the cusp of a major milestone: a planned U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance station that would make it the first in Latin America to offer such a service.
