The swimmer who broke a world record from the outside lane
In short: During the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, Qin Haiyang performed a remarkable feat by winning gold from the outside lane. Despite entering the final as the only competitor with a slow qualifying mark, he surged past his rivals to prove that determination can overcome a significant physical and psychological disadvantage.
Qin Haiyang's ascent to the pinnacle of swimming is defined by a transition from technical errors to historic dominance. After a disappointing experience at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he was disqualified for an illegal kick despite winning his heat, Qin shifted his training to work under coach Cui Dengrong. This move proved pivotal; under Cui's guidance, Qin saw significant improvements that culminated in his becoming the first Asian swimmer named Male Swimmer of the Year by World Aquatics in 2023.
The 2023 World Aquatics Championships served as his breakout moment. Qin achieved a historic milestone by securing victories in every breaststroke category during one championship tournament. During this period, he clocked a time of 2:05.48 in the 200m breaststroke, shattering the world record previously held by Zac Stubblety-Cook. His dominance continued into the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games (held in 2023), where he secured five gold medals and was named MVP alongside teammate Zhang Yufei.
Qin's technical mastery is perhaps best illustrated by his performance at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Demonstrating incredible determination, he claimed the 200m breaststroke title while entering as the sole competitor with a qualifying mark over 2:09.00. Starting from lane eight, he managed to overcome the physical and psychological disadvantage of the outside lane to finish with a time of 2:07.41.
Beyond individual glory, Qin has been a cornerstone of Chinese relay success. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he contributed to a historic Men's 4x100m medley relay gold. By recording split times of 57.82 and 57.98 during the finals, he ensured the American squad suffered its initial loss in this specific contest since the 1960 Olympic debut.
