In short: In 1875, Richard Joshua Reynolds left his father's Virginia farm to build a 'little red factory' in North Carolina. What began with 150,000 pounds of tobacco has grown into a massive corporate entity that once turned an inland city into a major international port of entry.

The company's ascent began in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where R. J. Reynolds established his first factory after selling his father's business in Patrick County, Virginia. By the 1890s, production had scaled from its initial 150,000 pounds to several million pounds per year. Due to huge volumes of French cigarette paper and Turkish tobacco for Camel, the firm's influence made Winston-Salem the US's eighth-largest port of entry by 1916.

The brand's reach expanded through strategic acquisitions and iconic products. Following the introduction of Camel in 1913, the company became a dominant force, at one point producing 25% of America's chewing tobacco. Such prosperity prompted vast diversification; throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the business entered the oil and food sectors, purchasing brands such as Del Monte Foods and Hawaiian Punch, before rebranding as R. J. Reynolds Industries, Inc. in 1970.

However, this growth has been shadowed by intense legal and ethical scrutiny. As early as 1953, internal research by chemist Claude Teague suggested tobacco was a factor in lung cancer. Decades later, the company faced the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and various lawsuits. In 2002, it was fined $15 million for targeting children with free cigarettes, and in 2014, it agreed to a $27.4 billion acquisition of Lorillard Tobacco Company. Today, the company operates as a subsidiary of British American Tobacco.

The company's history is also marked by high-stakes corporate warfare, notably the 1988 leveraged buyout of its parent, RJR Nabisco, by KKR—a saga famously documented in the book 'Barbarians at the Gate'.
