From engineering careers to 30 million subscribers: the unexpected rise of Rhett & Link
In short: Before they were the world's second most influential content creators, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal were studying civil and industrial engineering. Their journey from North Carolina classmates to YouTube titans involves everything from Christian punk rock to a talk show that ended because a Chia Pet died.
The partnership of Rhett James McLaughlin and Charles Lincoln "Link" Neal III began on September 4, 1984, when they first met in first grade at Buies Creek Elementary School in North Carolina. Their shared history spans decades, from writing a screenplay called "Gutless Wonders" at age fourteen to attending North Carolina State University as roommates in 1996. While Neal studied industrial engineering and McLaughlin studied civil engineering, they eventually transitioned from their professional engineering roles and a period of Christian evangelism with the organization Cru to become full-time entertainers.
Their flagship series, Good Mythical Morning, launched on January 9, 2012. The show's name itself is a relic of their childhood; as children, they were once given coloring books featuring mythical creatures like unicorns to occupy them after being disciplined for writing swear words on their desks. Managed by Mythical Entertainment, this programme has expanded into a vast media powerhouse, accumulating more than 10.8 billion views and 19.5 million subscribers by March 2026. Industry lists highlight the pair's impact; Rolling Stone identified them as the second most powerful creators in 2024, while Forbes placed them at #5 in their 2026 Top Creators list.
The Mythical ecosystem extends far beyond their main talk show. It includes the cooking-focused Mythical Kitchen, which features series like "Last Meals"—a program that earned a Webby Award in 2024—and the podcast Ear Biscuits. Their production reach also includes the subscription service The Mythical Society and a move to Netflix in September 2026, where Good Mythical Morning, Mythical Kitchen, and Last Meals began releasing episodes simultaneously.
