From Army brat to sports anchor: The career trajectory of Sage Steele
In short: Born in the Panama Canal Zone to a military family, Sage Steele rose to prominence as a familiar face on ESPN. Her journey from local news reporting to hosting flagship sports programs eventually led to a high-profile legal battle and a transition into the world of independent podcasting.
Sage Steele was born in 1972, the daughter of Gary and Mona Steele. Her father, a career military officer who served for 23 years, achieved historical significance as the inaugural Black athlete to play varsity football at West Point. Growing up in an Army family, Steele lived in various international locations, including Belgium and Greece, before her family settled in Colorado in 1984. She eventually pursued a degree in sports communication at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating in 1995.
Steele began her professional broadcasting career at WSBT-TV in South Bend, followed by roles at WISH-TV in Indianapolis and WFTS in Tampa. In 2001, she became a founding personality at Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, where she covered the Baltimore Ravens. Her tenure at ESPN began in 2007, where she became a staple of SportsCenter and hosted programs such as NBA Countdown. Beyond sports, she also hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the Miss America pageant.
Her career at ESPN encountered significant friction in 2021 following comments made on a podcast regarding vaccine mandates and personal identity. After being suspended, Steele filed a lawsuit in 2022, claiming the network retaliated against her and infringed upon her free speech. The parties reached a settlement in August 2023, resulting in her departure from the network. Since then, Steele has pivoted to new media, becoming the first host on Bill Maher's podcast network in 2024 and joining the animated series Mr. Birchum.
