In short: Settled in 1854, San Saba, Texas, is a rural community defined by its namesake river. While its population remains modest, the town gained global recognition through the work of Edmund E. Risien, an Englishman who transformed the local native nut industry and caught the attention of international royalty.

The transformation of San Saba into the self-proclaimed Pecan Capital of the World began in 1874 when Edmund E. Risien arrived in the county. Risien dedicated his life to improving native nut varieties, eventually establishing the West Texas Pecan Nursery at the confluence of the San Saba and Colorado Rivers. Central to his success was the 'Mother Pecan Tree,' a specimen that served as the genetic foundation for numerous commercially significant varieties, including the 'San Saba Improved,' 'Texas Prolific,' and 'Western Schley.'

Risien’s horticultural innovations were so successful that his customer base expanded far beyond Texas. His reputation reached the highest levels of society, with notable clients including Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. His work also attracted the attention of the Post Cereals Co., cementing the region's status as a hub for high-quality pecan production. This legacy remains a defining feature of the local identity, even as the town has evolved into a rural community of 3,117 residents.

Today, the city covers 1.8 square miles and maintains a strictly rural character, with 100% of its population residing in rural areas as of the 2020 census. While the pecan industry provided the town's historical claim to fame, modern San Saba is supported by the San Saba Independent School District. The district has continued to invest in local infrastructure, notably opening new elementary facilities and science laboratories in October 2013 to serve students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
