How Shaji N. Karun brought Malayalam cinema to the global stage
In short: Shaji N. Karun was a visionary Indian filmmaker who transformed regional cinema through his distinct, award-winning narratives. From his debut at Cannes to his foundational role in establishing India's first film academy, Karun’s influence spanned decades, bridging the gap between local storytelling and the international festival circuit.
Born in 1952 in the Kollam district of Kerala, Shaji N. Karun began his career as a cinematographer after graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India in 1974. He quickly became a key figure in the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, where he worked to shift the center of the regional film industry away from Madras and back to Kerala. His directorial debut, the 1988 film Piravi, earned significant international acclaim, including a special recognition at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, marking the start of a career defined by both artistic and institutional leadership.
Karun’s work is noted for its exploration of grief and identity, themes central to his acclaimed films like Swaham and Vanaprastham. He achieved the rare distinction of presenting three consecutive films at official Cannes sections. Beyond his creative output, he was instrumental in shaping film culture in India. In 1998, he founded the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the nation's first institution dedicated to film and television, and helped establish the International Film Festival of Kerala as a competitive, globally recognized event.
Throughout his life, Karun balanced his creative projects with administrative roles, including serving as the Chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation from 2019 until his death in 2025. While his career was marked by numerous honors, including the J. C. Daniel Award in 2023, his later years also saw public scrutiny regarding allegations of workplace harassment. Despite these complexities, his legacy remains tied to his efforts to elevate Malayalam cinema and his persistent commitment to the craft of filmmaking until his passing at age 73.
